CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Two Champaign middle schools were recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education for their improvement last year.

Both Edison and Jefferson Middle Schools showed improvement in math and English Language Arts — and a decrease of students being chronically absent. The Champaign School District said they focused more on creating quality environments in the classroom before moving to outside interventions. The schools also raised their overall designations.

“We were able to move those two schools, Edison Middle School and Jefferson Middle School, from comprehensive, which is the lowest 5% in the state, and that means students were performing at the lowest 5% in the state. [We] moved them from comprehensive to commendable, which is, they’re moving in the right direction,” Champaign Superintendent Shelia Boozer said.

The superintendent said these schools both graded above where they were before the pandemic — which was one of the district’s bigger goals.
